In order for my piece to match the tone that I am looking for I have looked into changing scenes in after effects to achieve a more washed out effect.
Another Idea that I have been playing with has been the concept of having the main character isolated from the rest of the world through a color filter which would have to require the main character having a bright color on his person somewhere to identify him clearly.
I'm not convinced that I can see much of a difference. With regard to your idea about highlighting the main character, this is very hard to do - you would need to basically create a matte and track the character in every single shot. It is manageable but VERY time consuming.
